Raw Sugar is a theatre-based production company that was founded in 2007, in
Melbourne Australia. Its aim is to create and produce beautiful theatre -
productions that audiences want to see. Theatre that moves, excites and
provokes thought, without ever lecturing or indulging in vague intellectual
mystification.
The idea is to encourage more Australian work on stages (and in film,
eventually!), especially new stuff. We really don't want to re-hash the same
old Aussie plays favoured by colleges and community theatre year-in, year-out.
You know what plays I'm referring to...
Raw Sugar's first production was 'Savage/Love', a short and poetic performance
by Sam Shepard and Joseph Chaikin. This production was produced and directed by
Samantha Hill, and featured Perri Cummings, Alex Lance, Louise McCrae and Paul
Nelson as the unnamed characters. Lighting design and operation was handled
beautifully by Alana Eaton, and all publicity design was crafted by Alex Lance.
Raw Sugar's second production, a staged play reading of 'Electric Fence' was
written and directed by Samantha Hill. The play captures life in the bush for
young women in all its grubby, hilarious glory. Set in outback NSW, the play
draws on stories and gossip from the real world of sheep and cattle stations.
'Electric Fence' tells the story of Lara, a young station hand destined to work
on the big family property and marry her childhood sweetheart. However, Lara's
got plans of her own - just a small dream to go to the city and test herself,
just once. Turning its back on typical naturalistic depictions of the bush,
'Electric Fence' embraces the absurd and the fantastic. People and places
distort to carry the story, a 2-way radio becomes the conduit for memory
and childhood dreams
Sometime in the future we will be undertaking a massive project - 'Little Moth
and the Broken Giants' - a gothic puppetry play set in the Victorian era. If
you're keen to be a part of this, especially if you have puppetry making or
music composition skills, we want to hear from you! Please contact us at
